Even though this region was there way before the arab invasion, the name of Torrox comes from the arabic word Turrux. Next to this region of Torrox you´ll find an old roman factory, but before the romans, the phoenicians roamed these lands. Phoenicians, romans an arabs...Torrox and Axarqui a have strong ties. Through the passing of times civilizations have left their mark in this enchanting city with a mountainous spirit but a Mediterrenean one as well.
Torrow was witness to the Roman empire, of the Garum (fish sause) and it´s exportation, their battles against the moors, with whom began the second millenium, until in the year 1487 was reconquered by the Catholic king and queen Isabel and Ferdinand.
Further along, at the end of the XIX century to be exact, Torrox suffered two huge earthquakes of a great magnitude in a consecutive manner, which destroyed Torrox as well as the region of Axarquia.
Today, Torrox has not forgotten it´s roots, those being fishing, agriculture, and livestock...the most important source of income for this region. Today tourism is the main source of income. |
