Velez-Malaga became known as a city in 1847, in all actuality it has a population of more than 70,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of Axarquia, and is also the most important city.

In it´s municipality you´ll find archeological remains from Maenoba, dated all the way back to the Roman Empire. Agriculture and fishing have been the main source of income, but in the past few decades the increasing tourism rate has become the main protagonist.
